Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy of carbon onions

The optical properties of spherical and polyhedral carbon onions were studied in relation with the strong extinction hump centered at 217.5 nm (4.6 mum-1) in the interstellar extinction curve. The ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of onions prepared by thermal annealing of diamond nanoparticles were measured. Theoretical calculations for the spherical and polyhedral carbon onions were also carried out to explain the experimental spectra.
