Viktor Mikhailovich Ustinov, born in 1958, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Sciences, Director of the STC Microelectronics and Head of the Laboratory of Physics of Semiconductor Heterostructures of the Ioffe Institute, specialist in physics and technology of semiconductor nanoheterostructures and devices based on them, author of more than 850 scientific papers and patents for inventions.

In 1981 he graduated from the Faculty of Electronic Engineering of the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute (now SPbGETU "LETI"). After graduation, he got a job at Ioffe Institute. In 1986 he defended his PhD thesis on the topic "Electrophysical properties of gallium arsenide, aluminum gallium arsenide and heterostructures with two-dimensional electron gas based on them grown by molecular beam epitaxy". In 1999, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Sciences for his work "Heterostructures with quantum dots (production, properties, lasers)". From 2004 to 2008, he held the position of Deputy Chairman for Science of the St. Petersburg Physico-Technological Scientific and Educational Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2006, he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The main scientific results of V.M. Ustinov:

  • development of growing technology by molecular beam epitaxy and investigation of physical properties of heterostructures with quantum dots and semiconductor injection lasers based on them;
  • development of nanoheterostructures for microwave electronics devices, their synthesis by molecular beam epitaxy, study of their structural, optical and electrical properties, creation of microwave devices based on them.

V.M. Ustinov - editor-in-chief of the journal "Technical Physics Letters", member of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences "Quantum Technologies", winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology in 2001, as well as the prize of the Government of St. Petersburg "for outstanding scientific results in the field of science and technology in 2021" in the nomination "nanotechnology — Zh. I. Alferov Prize" — for a series of works "Semiconductor nanoheterostructures for microwave electronics".

V.M. Ustinov conducts a lot of scientific, organizational and teaching work, being concurrently the head of the Department of Optoelectronics of SPbSETU "LETI". Under his leadership, 5 PhD theses were defended.
