The study presents the results of investigating interconfigurational d-f luminescence in the ultraviolet (UV) spectral region and energy transfer between rare-earth ions during upconversion in wide-gap compounds doped with Pr3+ ions. Compounds with different crystalline and electronic structures were examined, the Stokes d-f- and f-f-luminescence of which had been previously studied. UV upconversion luminescence of Pr3+ ions under excitation with a visible-range laser diode was observed in Pr3+-doped crystals with the following structures: garnet (Y3Al5O12, Lu3(Al,Ga)5O12 nanocrystals, quaternary Gd1Y2Al2Ga3O12 ceramic); silicate-apatite (LiLa9(SiO4)6O2); orthosilicate (Y2SiO5, Lu2SiO5); and lanthanum beryllate (La2Be2O5). Furthermore, in gadolinium-containing matrices (Gd1Y2Al2Ga3O12 ceramic and CsGd2F7) under two-photon laser excitation (450 or 488 nm), resonant energy transfer between excited states of rare-earth ions 4f15d1(Pr3+)->6P7/2(Gd3+) was observed, followed by UV emission at 314 nm 6P7/2->8S7/2 transition in Gd3+). This resonant energy transfer 4f15d1(Pr3+)->6P7/2(Gd3+), interconfigurational d-f-emission, and multiphonon relaxation of excited 4f15d1->3PJ states to 3PJ states followed by Stokes f-f-emission in the visible range are competing channels for electron relaxation the 4f15d1(Pr3+) excited-state band. A necessary condition for observing upconversion luminescence is that the energy position of the 4f15d1(Pr3+) excited-state band lies below the conduction band, fails to exceed twice the energy of the 3H4->3PJ(Pr3+) transitions, and that the efficiencies of multiphonon 4f15d1->3PJ-relaxation and energy transfer to crystal-lattice defects are low. Keywords: Pr3+ ion, Gd3+ ion, upconversion, interconfigurational d-f-luminescence, energy transfer, wide-gap crystals.
