A strong dependence of cone formation on the crystallographic orientation of tungsten grains on the surface was experimentally observed under irradiation with a 30 keV argon ion beam. It was found that grains with the (114) orientation were the most susceptible to cones formation. The existing concepts of cone formation under physical sputtering are supplemented by taking into account ion channeling in crystals. Keywords: tungsten, ion irradiation, channeling, ion-induced cones, sputtering yield.
